Week 20: David Becomes King and Jesus in Jerusalem

May 11th, 2009

Reading this week

  • 1 Sam. 24- 2 Sam. 13
  • Luke 20:20-23:12

In 1 Samuel we continue to read about David’s life a fugitive from Saul, and how he spared Saul’s life on two occasions.  He refused to harm God’s anointed king, even though God had already rejected Saul as king and anointed David as his replacement.  At the end of 1 Samuel we learn about the death of Saul, and in 2 Samuel we read of the establishment of David as king over Israel and his victory over Israel’s enemies.  The high point is God’s promise to build David a “house” in chapter 7, while the low point is David’s sin with Bathsheba in chapter 11.  David is presented as a complex human character.  He is a “man after God’s own heart,” but he also has serious flaws. He is a great warrior, yet he laments the unnecessary violence of his generals and shows kindness to Saul’s descendants.  He experienced considerable disappointment and sadness in his life.

In Luke we read of the continued attempts of Jewish religious leaders to trap Jesus with questions, and His question that stumped them.  Jesus gives teaching about the end times and institutes the Lord’s Supper.  Then we read of His betrayal by Judas, prayer in Gethsemane,  arrest and trial.

I hope that you are keeping up with your Bible reading.  Please share your observations and questions in the comment section.

  1. I am slowly trying to catch up! But I have to say I have been really challenged by Luke. It’s a lot to process about obeying these commands in our lives.
