Week 19: David Anointed King and Journey to Jerusalem

May 3rd, 2009

Reading this week

  • 1 Sam. 11-24
  • Luke 17:11-20:19

In 1 Samuel this week we read about Saul’s disobedience to God in several incidents that lead to God’s rejection of him as king.  Instead, God sent Samuel to anoint David as the new king who would be a man after His own heart, after which God sovereignly arranged for David to become part of Saul’s court.  David gained national recognition by slaying Goliath, but there is a growing tension between Saul and David.  Finally, Saul tries to kill David and David has to flee for his life.  David has been chosen by God to be king, but he must live as a fugitive.

In Luke we learn about Christ’s final journey to Jerusalem.  Along the way He continues his teaching ministry and does some more miracles, but His focus is on getting to Jerusalem where He will die for our sins.  Towards the end of this week we read of the Triumphal Entry on Palm Sunday and the first part of Holy Week, the final week before His death.

  1. Hey PK, is there a new reading chart for this trimester?

  2. We are working on a new chart for this trimester. Meanwhile, you can download the one page per month version and use that.
