Week 18: Transition to Monarchy and Discipleship

April 25th, 2009

Reading this week

  • Jud. 18-1-Sam. 10
  • Luke 13:1-17:10

In the last pat of Judges we continue to learn about the moral and spiritual decline of Israel, and the civil war that nearly wipes out the tribe of Dan.  Then we read the short book of Ruth, which describes the adventures of one family during the period of the judges.  Ruth is a Moabite girl who chooses to follow her mother-in-law back to Israel and ends up as the great-grandmother of King David. In the middle of the week we begin 1 Samuel, which describes the transition from the period of the judges to the monarchy.  As a transition character, Samuel was both a judge and a prophet.  In this week’s portion we learn about the birth and ministry of Samuel and the selection of Saul as the first king of Israel.

In Luke we read about the continuation of Christ’s ministry, with an emphasis on discipleship.  What does Jesus require of those who would follow Him?  What does He think of half-hearted followers?  This section also includes the much loved parable of the Prodigal Son, which reveals God as a loving Father.

What have you been learning in your Bible reading?  What questions do you have?
