Week 17: Judges in Israel and Christ’s Teaching

April 18th, 2009

Reading this week

  • Judges 3-17
  • Luke 10:17-12:59

The book of Judges is mainly about political/military/spiritual leaders called “judges” who ruled Israel at that time.  The pattern for this period is as follows:  Israel departs  from God and worships  other gods, God judges them by allowing them to be defeated by their enemies, Israel repents and cries out to God for help, God delivers them by raising up a judge to lead them in battle against their enemies and rule the nation.  Then after the judge dies, Israel returns to idolatry and the cycle repeats again.

Some of the judges are mentioned in only a few lines, while others receive a much more detailed treatment.  Some of the longer accounts cover Deborah, Gideon, Jephthah and Samson.

Our reading in Luke is mostly made up of the teaching of Jesus, including teaching on prayer.   Jesus is calling His followers into a relationship as His disciples, but there is growing opposition from the Pharisees.  At one point He directly rebukes the Pharisees for their hypocrisy.
