Week 16: Conquest of the Land and Discipleship

April 11th, 2009

Reading this week

  • Josh. 12-Judg. 2
  • Luke 8:4-10:16

At this point we are in the narrative sections of both the OT and the NT, so it is a bit easier going than the lists of OT laws.  As you read these sections, try to put yourselves in the place of the people in the story and try to imagine what it might have been like for them.  What did God want them to learn, and what is He speaking to us through these events?

This week we read the bulk of the book of Joshua, which describes the conquest of the promised land.  Even though God promised Abraham that He would give the land to their descendants, they still had to fight many battles to obtain it.  They divided the land among the tribes of Israel, as God had instructed Moses.  You can read quickly through the detailed description of the borders of each territory, but it is helpful to consult a map to get a general idea of the land allotted to each tribe.   The tribe of Levi is unique in that it did not receive any territory within the land, only certain cities for their use.  They were to be supported by the tithes and offerings of the rest of the tribes.  Joshua, like Moses, gives a farewell speech at the end of his life and exhorts the people to remain faithful to the Lord.  But the land is still not completely conquered, and in Judges we begin to learn of Israel’s periods of departure from God.

In Luke we read Christ’s continued ministry, including some parables and remarkable miracles.  We also learn about the mission of the twelve and the seventy, sent out by Jesus to preach the good news of the Kingdom.  Luke includes more teaching on discipleship than the other Gospels, so this is a good place to learn what it means to be a faithful follower of Jesus.

Thank you for this map! I’ve been reading through Joshua and couldn’t get a handle on where the tribes were settled, as my maps did not show it. Thanks again and may God bless you, Fawn.
