Reading this week
- Deut. 29-Josh. 11
- Luke 4:31-8:3
This week we will finish the Pentateuch (Torah) and begin the second major section of the OT, the historical narratives. As you read this new section, try to put yourself in the sandals of the major characters and imagine what they might have been thinking and feeling, and especially what God was trying to teach them.
As we finish up Deuteronomy and hear the final words of Moses and further preparation for entering the land. Moses warns them, and tells them that in the future they will turn from God, suffer his judgment, be taken into captivity and later restored. This is in fact exactly what later happens. In Joshua we read about the beginning of the conquest of the promised land. Moses is gone and now Joshua must take up the leadership of the nation. God parts the Jordan river, as He had parted the Red Sea, and miraculously delivers the fortified city of Jericho into their hands. But they are defeated at Ai due to the sin of Achan and they succumb to the deception of the Gibeonites, so it is not all smooth sailing.
In Luke we learn about the early ministry of Jesus in Galilee, including the calling of the twelve Apostles. Jesus works some remarkable miracles, but as He begins to attract attention He has his first confrontations by the Pharisees. In chapter 6 we find what could be considered a shortened version of the Sermon on the Mount.
